The Faculty Development Department organized a five-day orientation programme for the recently recruited faculty members (Batch-II) to make them familiar with the institutional practices and the instructional strategies of teaching and learning, because teachers are considered to be the pillars of Paavai. The orientation programme was held from 17.06.2019 to 21.06.2019 at the Smart Hall. 30 faculty members from Paavai institutions attended the orientation programme. The Inauguration was held at the Smart hall on 17.06.2019, where in Shri.CA.N.V.Natarajan, the Chairman explained the importance of teaching profession, role of teachers and their commitment towards students to get centum results and to groom them as employed citizens of the society. Smt.Mangai Natarajan, the Correspondent, felicitated the gathering. She highlighted the need for developing positive attitude among the teachers. She also pointed out the professional norms to be followed as a faculty member and the targets to be focussed to make the students degree holders. The objectives and methodology of the orientation programme were read out by Mrs.K.Subashini, Associate professor, FDD. Dr.R.Kasthuri Bai, Dean, FDD welcomed the gathering. After the inauguration, the technical sessions commenced. Prem Kumar, Principal, PEC, Dr.M.Devi, Principal, PCE, Dr.R.Arangasamy, ECE/HoD, PEC, Dr.A.Suphalakshmi, CSE/HoD, PEC, Dr.K.Saravanan, CSE/HoD PCT, Mrs.Mahalakshmi, Additional Placement and Training officer, PEC and Mrs. K.Subashini, Associate professor, Faculty Development Department were the resource persons for the programme who threw light on areas such as ‘Paavai on the path of Progress ’, ‘Professional ethics and responsibility of teachers’, ‘Academic Leadership’, ‘Communication skills’, ‘Paavai culture’, ‘Teaching science subjects’, ‘Attitude’, ‘Institutional belongingness’, ‘Teacher accountability’ ,‘Smart teaching’ Importance of Research, ‘Role of teachers in placement’, and ‘Instructional pedagogy’. During his presentation, the Chairman, emphasized that, the expected outcome from Paavai faculty is essential in the sense, that the staff should take all means to retain students during the entire course of study. There should not be any students dropout. It should be the utmost responsibility of the staff to enable the students to complete their degree and get certification. He accentuated that the faculty members should know about their students completely, so that it will be easy to guide the students efficiently and thoroughly. He further stressed the ideal qualities of Paavai students and advised the faculty to impart the same to the students. Finally, he concluded that the destiny of the students is in the hands of the teacher. Henceforth, the staff should work with involvement and dedication. Dr.K.K.Ramasamy, Director Administration, expounded on the different roles and responsibilities of the teachers. He advocated the practical method of teaching to reach out to the students of all categories. Various examples related to different branches of study were explained. Dr.C.Sathish, Director, spoke on, ‘Academic leadership’.He narrated the good qualities of a leader. He said the teacher should reflect on their practices and consider how wellthey are encouraging active learning.He stated that in order to face today’s higher education challenges, a teacher should have the courage and confidence of a lion, the king of the forest and also acquire a big focussed vision leading to big results as that of an eagle. He showed video illustrating the qualities of a leader. He presented the hand-outs to the teachers to self-examine one’s strength and burn out the negatives for the betterment of an individual. Finally, he concluded that the teachers should emerge as contributors to the growth of an institution. Dr.Kasthuri Bai, Dean FDD elaborated the need and the relevance of English language and power of communicative competence. Dr.K.Selvi, Dean Academics explained the significance of Paavai Culture, Paavai Mantra and Paavai belief. Dr.M.PremKumar, Principal, PEC, emphasized the importance of developing a right attitude to serve as worthy members of Paavai. He explained that. ‘One’s attitude determines one’s Altitude’. Dr.M.Devi, Principal, PCE explained the Institutional belongingness and further touched upon the principle of integrity and loyalty.. Dr.A.S.Kandasamy, Dean ECE, explained the thrust on teaching the fundamentals of physics, chemistry and mathematics. He focussed on the need for continuous learning to make the teaching relevant and application oriented. Dr.R.Arangasamy, HoD ECE elaborated on the significance of ‘Teacher Accountability’. He stated that accountability is a measure of the teacher’s dedication towards their job.And the staff are held accountable for the education that the students are receiving. Dr.A.Suphalakshmi, HoD, CSE explained the concept of Smart teaching. Dr.K.Saravanan, PCT, elaborated on the importance of Research and consultancy service at the professional education level. Mrs.Mahalakshmi, Additional Training and Placement officer, referred to the big drift in the placement and the teacher’s role in enabling students to undergo placement training. She stated that the staff should develop potentials to influence and enhance knowledge, skills, attitude and behavior of the students, so that they will be placed in top companies.Mrs K.Subashini, Associate professor, Faculty Development Department emphasized the pedagogy of teaching and learning. She further highlighted the different strategies and techniques of teaching and learning to make the classroom interactive and interesting. Each resource person explained, elaborated and had an interactive session with the faculty members. Around thirteen topics had been handled in these five days. Throughout the orientation the members were assisted to hone their LSRW skills. Assignments, peer teaching and evaluation, lesson plan writing, preparation of mind-map, were undertaken by the faculty members. Every faculty gave a model presentation of their teaching units and feedback was given then and there to enhance the procedure of the effective teaching. Different kinds of activities such as Ice breaking event, leadership and Number game, Tables and Thirukurral recitation game, memory games were also conducted to keep up the excitement of teaching and learning. The programme thus catered to the needs of the inductees and the Faculty Development Department expressed its willingness to be with them as and when required. The valedictory function was held on 21.06.2019 at the smart hall by 02.30 p.m. All the faculty members recorded their feedback. Smt. MangaiNatarajan, the correspondent felicitated the gathering by explaining the multiple roles of teachers in adhering to the ethics and the responsibilities of the profession. She highlighted the idea that the teachers should act as a facilitator, guide, controller and counselor to the students in bringing out the best in them and make them realize their potentials to successfully complete their studies. With this the orientation programme came to an end.
